Baggage by Stacie Withers
Written by Lazy Gramophone Press on Sunday the 24th of January 2010
Theyre getting heavier, you know, these
shadows of mine.
I brought them the long way round, carried
them on my shoulder.
I tried to pass them off on others
I met along the road but could neither
sell nor give these dark gifts.
So they stay with me, always it would
seem, and my elders
claim they shape me, secretly, while my
eyes are focused forward.
I make bold statements, convincing statements
of intent and wisdom, as the shadows whisper their
answers to me and I
repeat them as my own.
I should be sorry for the things Ive seen,
be quietly humbled by the lessons learned,
the battles I survived;
others werent as lucky as I.
Their shadows are all thats left,
fragile and fleeting remnants of faces that
used to have names.
But instead of being repentant, I am defiant.
my scars are nothing
to be proud of, but nor am I ashamed of the
wounds that gave them life.
So I carry my shadows, despite their weight, and
hope their value holds until
I am better ready to rest. I am told their company
improves with the knowing, as will my strength.
